Toyota gives P3 million boost to Tamaraw conservation

Published

on

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) has donated P3 million to help protect the critically endangered Tamaraw in Mindoro, expanding its support for conservation work as the wild buffalo’s population continues to recover.

The donation, made through the Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation, will support the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Tamaraw Conservation Program (TCP).

The partnership was formalized through a memorandum of agreement among the TMP Foundation, DENR-Tamaraw Conservation Program Office and Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. during the 2026 Tamaraw Fiesta in Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro.

The P3-million fund will be used for habitat monitoring and scientific research, training programs for barangay and Indigenous Peoples volunteers, public awareness activities and improvements to the Tamaraw Research and Conservation Center.

Part of the donation will finance research and monitoring equipment for the center to strengthen field work and long-term protection of the species.

The latest support follows a partnership between DENR and the TMP Foundation that began with the launch of the Next Generation Tamaraw initiative in December 2024.

Toyota expanded its assistance in 2025 by donating a Tamaraw utility vehicle for field operations on Mindoro Island. It also provided P500,000 worth of Bantay Tamaraw kits for rangers conducting patrols and monitoring in known habitats.

The Tamaraw has a particular connection to Toyota as the namesake of the company’s long-running utility vehicle in the Philippines.

TMP said its conservation work also supports the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, including efforts to promote biodiversity and a society in harmony with nature.

The assistance comes as conservation authorities report further growth in the Tamaraw population.

The 2026 Annual Tamaraw Population Count recorded 425 animals in Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park, up from 380 in 2025.

DENR attributed the increase to continued habitat protection, scientific monitoring, law enforcement and community participation.

The Tamaraw, scientifically known as Bubalus mindorensis, is a small wild buffalo found only on Mindoro Island and remains classified as critically endangered.

TMP Foundation said it will continue supporting conservation programs intended to protect the species and strengthen work being carried out by rangers, researchers and local communities on the island.
