Toyota and Standard Insurance Promote Car Recycling in Cavite

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has backed a new vehicle dismantling facility in Cavite, marking it as the second official site in the country under Toyota’s global car recycling program.

Toyota, Standard Take Lead in Car Recycling with New Cavite Dismantling Hub

The facility, owned and run by Standard Insurance Co., Inc., is now part of the “Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project.” Located inside the insurer’s training and technical center, the 9,000-square-meter site can dismantle up to six vehicles a day. These are mostly vehicles that have been written off through insurance claims. Each year, about 850 cars are dismantled here.

Standard Insurance spent ₱17.8 million to build the site. The goal is to properly handle end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) — cars that are no longer usable. Instead of letting these vehicles sit unused or fall into the wrong hands, the facility recovers usable parts and safely disposes of toxic materials. This supports the idea of a circular economy, where old materials are reused instead of wasted.

TMP President Masando Hashimoto praised the partnership. “We are very grateful to Standard Insurance. Their effort gives Toyota customers peace of mind knowing their vehicles are handled responsibly at the end of their life,” he said. Hashimoto added that the project supports Toyota’s long-term goals for carbon neutrality and sustainability under the company’s Environmental Challenge 2050.

With this new Cavite site and a similar facility opened last year in Mexico, Pampanga, there are now two Toyota-recognized dismantling centers in the Philippines. The Cavite facility is also the fifth in Southeast Asia to be certified under the global program.

Since 2021, Standard Insurance and TMP have been working together through the “Toyota Insure” program, which offers insurance coverage for Toyota car buyers. This latest project strengthens their partnership by focusing on what happens to vehicles when they’re no longer on the road.

BMW Philippines has added a new variant to its 3 Series lineup with the arrival of the BMW 318i Professional, now available in limited numbers across selected dealerships nationwide.

Distributed by SMC Asia Car Distributors Corp., the 318i Professional targets buyers who want a premium compact sedan with updated tech and a more refined cabin without stepping into higher engine outputs. It is priced at Php 3,490,000 and comes with a 5-year or 200,000-kilometer warranty, whichever comes first.

Under the hood is a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine that delivers 156 hp and 250 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic with paddle shifters. Drivers can choose from Comfort, Eco Pro, and Sport modes, with BMW quoting a combined fuel consumption of 6.5 L/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 146 g/km.

The 318i Professional is based on the latest Life Cycle Impulse (LCI II) update of the G20 3 Series. It gets revised LED headlight signatures, reshaped front and rear bumpers, and 18-inch V-spoke bicolor alloy wheels with M high-gloss Shadowline trim. Convenience features include Comfort Access keyless entry, automatic tailgate operation, a rain sensor with automatic light control, plus Park Distance Control front and rear with a reversing camera.

Safety equipment includes multiple airbags, DSC, DTC, ABS, runflat tires with indicator, ISOFIX mounts, and BMW’s Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant systems for lane keeping, collision avoidance, and automated parking.

The launch of the 318i Professional in the Philippines coincides with the 50th anniversary of the BMW 3 Series, which continues to be one of the brand’s core models globally. Units will be offered in select BMW dealerships including Autoallee BMW in Eton Centris, RSA Motors Greenhills and Libis, Pampanga Premier Cars BMW, and Visayas Motor Works in Cebu.

Charge Before You Leap

Published

on

Electric vehicles are becoming more visible across Metro Manila, with compact models such as the VinFast VF 3 and VF 5 now blended into everyday traffic. As more Filipinos consider their first electric car, VinFast outlines seven key questions to guide buyers before making the switch.

1. How far do I usually travel?
Range remains the first concern for new EV users. For short city commutes around Makati, Ortigas, or Quezon City, compact models like the VF 5, offering up to 326 kilometers, or the VF 6, which reaches around 480 kilometers, may be enough. Those who frequently drive to provincial destinations such as Subic, Baguio, or Batangas are encouraged to look at the VF 7, which delivers nearly 500 kilometers of range on a full charge.

2. What battery type does the EV use?
Battery technology influences durability, safety, and longevity. VinFast equips the VF 6 and VF 7 with LFP batteries, a Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry known for stability in hot climates like the Philippines. These batteries are covered by warranties of up to 10 years or 200,000 kilometers, giving buyers additional peace of mind.

3. Where can I charge, and what charger do I need?
The growth of public charging stations in malls, offices, condominiums, and major highways has improved convenience, but understanding accessibility remains essential. Buyers are urged to check connector types, available charging points near their route, and the possibility of installing a home charger. VinFast customers are supported by a three year free charging program in partnership with V Green to help with early adoption.

4. What safety features does the EV include?
Safety continues to be a nonnegotiable requirement. The VF 3 already offers ABS, hill start assist, and airbags despite its compact footprint. Higher models such as the VF 5, VF 6, and VF 7 include blind spot alerts, rear cross traffic warning, and multiple airbags, features designed to help in dense urban traffic or long expressway trips.

5. Where will I bring the EV for servicing?
After sales support is a major factor for first time EV buyers. VinFast is expanding service coverage through partners like Motech and JIGA, allowing customers easier access to maintenance. Vehicles also receive over the air updates, enabling system improvements without visiting a service center.

6. How much will I spend on charging and upkeep?
EV ownership typically leads to lower running costs. A full charge at home can cost ₱200 to ₱300, significantly lower than fuel refills. With fewer moving parts and no engine oil to replace, maintenance expenses also decrease over time.

7. Is an EV the right fit for my lifestyle?
VinFast encourages buyers to evaluate daily routes, charging options, and long term mobility needs. For VF 3 owner Paul Reyes, who has already driven about 10,000 kilometers, the quiet drive, low operating cost, and overall convenience convinced him to commit to electric for good.

VinFast Philippines hopes these seven questions give first time buyers the clarity they need as they join the growing EV community.
