Millionth Milestone

Volvo Cars has delivered its one millionth plug-in hybrid, marking a clear step in the brand’s shift to full electrification. PHEVs accounted for 23 percent of Volvo’s global sales in the first half of 2025. Sales jumped from almost 46,000 units in 2019 to more than 177,000 units in 2024.

The XC60 and XC90 continue to anchor demand. The XC60 led Europe’s PHEV market in 2024 and has stayed strong through 2025. Both models received updates last year, helping Volvo keep momentum in key regions such as Sweden, the United States, and China.

Volvo says many owners drive their PHEVs like EVs in the city. Internal data shows about half of total driving time happens without the engine running.

The lineup is still growing. Volvo recently launched the XC70, its first long-range plug-in hybrid. Under the CLTC cycle, it can travel more than 200 kilometers on electric power.

Management says the brand will move to a fully electric range at a pace that matches customer readiness. Plug-in hybrids will stay as a bridge for buyers who want electric capability with the reassurance of a gasoline engine.

Volvo has offered PHEVs for more than a decade, starting with the V60 in 2012. Today it sells five PHEV models alongside six fully electric models, giving customers options across sizes and segments.
