Aston Martin’s Alonso keeps F1 future open

Fernando Alonso kept reporters guessing over his Formula One future on Thursday as the two-time world champion prepared for his home Spanish Grand Prix.

The 45-year-old had been expected to announce his plans before the first race at Madrid’s new Madring circuit. His decision has drawn greater attention after Aston Martin struggled with the hybrid-era cars introduced this season.

Asked whether an announcement was coming, Alonso replied: “Not soon.”

When pressed on why he continued to delay his decision, the Spaniard added: “Because I think it’s nice.”

Alonso also gave evasive answers when asked whether Aston Martin was pressing him for a decision. He acknowledged that other drivers had spoken with team owner Lawrence Stroll about a seat that could become available.

The former world champion said he wanted to see if planned rule changes could make the racing more enjoyable next season.

“Next year, there is a step, in the right direction, hopefully,” Alonso said.

He also disclosed that he was studying several options, including the possibility of taking a different role within Aston Martin.

Alonso is competing in his 23rd Formula One season. His next move will determine whether he continues behind the wheel or begins a new chapter with the team.
