Geely unveils AI-powered EV charging system with advanced battery protection

Geely Auto Group has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered charging system designed to shorten electric vehicle charging times while managing battery temperatures and reducing long-term wear.

Unveiled globally on September 23, 2026, Geely Smart Charging uses an AI energy model called Xingrui PowerMind, jointly developed with technology company StepFun.

The system connects the vehicle, battery, charging station, cloud network, power grid and energy storage facilities to coordinate charging according to the battery’s condition.

One of its main features is the ability to predict battery temperatures up to 30 seconds ahead. This allows the system to adjust charging power before excessive heat develops instead of reducing output only after temperatures rise.

Geely says the technology is designed to keep average battery charging temperatures below 55 degrees Celsius and peak temperatures under 65 degrees Celsius.

A five-point liquid-cooling system provides additional heat management throughout the charging process. It covers the charging station’s energy storage battery, charging equipment, cable, charging port and the vehicle’s battery pack.

Temperature management is particularly relevant in tropical markets such as the Philippines, where high ambient temperatures can add to the heat generated during rapid charging.

Geely has also developed Lithium-ion Pulse Restoration Technology to address battery deterioration associated with repeated fast charging.

The technology uses small electrical pulses to help reactivate lithium ions that accumulate at the battery’s negative electrode. Combined with AI-based charging management, Geely claims the process can increase battery cycle life by up to 20 percent.

The system can adjust charging current, cooling intensity and charging duration according to each battery’s condition. For home charging, Geely has developed a lower-rate charging strategy intended to reduce battery degradation over time.

On the charging hardware side, Geely’s fifth-generation Smart Charging Station supports peak power of up to 2,250 kilowatts.

Its Shendun Golden Battery supports charging rates of up to 12C, a measurement of how quickly a battery can accept energy relative to its capacity. At that rate, a complete charge could theoretically take approximately five minutes.

In tests cited by Geely, batteries used in the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001 charged from 10 to 70 percent in four minutes and 30 seconds. Charging from 10 to 97 percent took eight minutes and 40 seconds.

Geely describes these figures as its fastest production-ready charging performance to date.

Another development is the company’s Next-Generation Ultra Short Blade Battery, which uses laser-welding technology to reduce heat generated during charging by a claimed 10 percent. The battery supports peak charging rates of up to 6C.

In the Philippines, Geely’s electrified vehicle lineup includes the EX2 and EX5 electric vehicles, along with the EX5 EM-i, which uses the company’s EM-i Super Hybrid technology.

The latest charging system belongs to Geely’s global technology roadmap. Its maximum 2,250-kW charging capability does not apply to current Philippine-market vehicles, and the company has yet to provide a local rollout schedule.

The development signals Geely’s direction for future electric vehicles, with charging speed and battery protection receiving equal attention as the company develops its next generation of electrified models.
