Volvo Cars Philippines is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Volvo Amazon, a model that helped establish the Swedish automaker’s reputation for vehicle safety and whose legacy continues in the fully electric EX30.

Hariphil Asia Resources Inc. (HARI), the exclusive distributor of Volvo Cars in the Philippines, is commemorating the Amazon’s introduction in 1956 and its contribution to the development of automotive safety.

The Amazon became closely associated with Volvo’s safety advances during an era when occupant protection was receiving greater attention.

In 1959, Volvo introduced the modern three-point seat belt developed by its engineer Nils Bohlin. The company made the patent available to other manufacturers, allowing the technology to benefit motorists across the automotive industry.

“Safety is not simply part of Volvo’s history; it is a responsibility that continues to shape its future,” said Maria Fe Perez-Agudo, vice chairman, president and CEO of HARI.

She said the Amazon represents an important milestone in Volvo’s commitment to developing technology that serves people and improves everyday mobility.

Seven decades later, that philosophy continues in the Volvo EX30, a compact fully electric sport utility vehicle equipped with driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies.

Its safety features include the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Aid and automatic emergency braking with vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist detection.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert with automatic braking, Door Opening Alert and Driver Alert System provide additional assistance in identifying potential hazards.

Depending on equipment level, the EX30 also offers Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control, Traffic Jam Assist, front and rear parking assistance and Park Pilot Assist.

The electric SUV received a five-star rating in the 2024 Euro NCAP safety assessment, scoring 88 percent for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant protection, 79 percent for vulnerable road users and 80 percent for safety assistance.

These technologies illustrate Volvo’s progression from passive occupant protection to systems that can help drivers detect and respond to hazards.

Volvo Cars Philippines said the Amazon’s heritage continues to influence the development of its modern vehicles, including the EX30.

Customers can view the EX30 at Volvo Cars Makati, where exclusive offers are available for the EX30 Core and Ultra variants.
